South Sudan’s government said it is still uncertain over whether it will sign a peace deal with opposition groups in Khartoum today.

The rivals were scheduled to sign the power sharing deal presented by the Sudan mediation team.

“I really doubt if it will be signed tomorrow (Tuesday) because it needs to be thoroughly studied. It cannot just be given and within less than 24 hours it is signed,” government information minister Michael Makuei said.

The outspoken official said his government has not yet seriously considered singing the proposed peace plan in Khartoum today, citing controversial provisions in the document.

“The mediators should have actually sticked to the provisions of the agreement instead of coming up with new provisions that have never been touched before,” he said.

Makuei, who is also the government spokesman, said the latest peace proposal disregarded the government of South Sudan.

“The way the document is written, it appears as if there is no government in South Sudan… We have sent it to the leadership in Juba so that they can respond to it. However, the document seems not to be in place,” he said.
