Our Affiliations

Our Name

Tamazuj means 'intermingling’ or ‘mixing’ in Arabic.

The name was originally coined for the mix of cultures that span the borderlands between Sudan and South Sudan. In their rich diversity, the peoples of the borderlands share common historical experiences, face similar ecological and economic challenges, and use a common lingua franca, Sudanese Arabic. Radio Tamazuj took its name from this concept and began as a service for the border regions.

In the years since its founding, however, Radio Tamazuj developed an appeal beyond its original target area and also consciously expanded its area of focus. Whereas the concept of ‘tamazuj’ originally referred to the mixing of Arab and non-Arab cultures, it now has broader meaning, referring also to cultural dynamics within Sudan and South Sudan, respectively. ‘Tamazuj’ points at once to the vast diversity of Sudan and South Sudan and to the intermingling of the cultures and peoples between the two countries and within them.

Within our broadcast area there are dozens of tribes, each with its own practices and identity. Nonetheless, there are some shared affinities across many of these cultures that make the experiences of one culture often recognisable to another. Moreover, Sudanese and South Sudanese are not segregated into isolated tribal units but are constantly engaging with each other and influencing each other. In fact, being able to navigate different cultural contexts is a necessary skill for those involved in government, business, social work, or those who seek to inter-marry or to promote inter-communal ties.

Consequently, many Sudanese and South Sudanese have developed a deep ability to understand and appreciate other cultures. The very concept of ‘tamazuj’ – mixing – is therefore a concept that is recognisable and easily embraced by members of our audience. It's an idea that captures a familiar reality – hospitality toward a guest from another culture, inter-marriage, commonalities in language, art or food, etc.

Radio Tamazuj builds on these powerful and shared elements of cultural experience. It embraces ‘tamazuj’ less as ideology than as reality. This points to major potential for organic audience loyalty and brand identification across a vast broadcast area. It also suggests the potential for our audiences to be not merely passive consumers of information, but active contributors to the cultural and information forms transmitted by Radio Tamazuj.
