South Sudanese traders decry Amieth market levies

A group of South Sudanese traders at Amieth common market in the disputed area of Abyei complained of heavy levies imposed on them by the peace committee in the area.

Garang Nyol, a trader at Amieth market, told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that the peace committee members at the common market have been imposing heavy levies on their goods.

Nyol explained that the committee usually charges them 500 South Sudanese Pounds per a barrel of fuel, saying those who fail to pay are being taken to a joint court.

He accused the members of the peace committee of corruption in the area.

Bilal Al-Sheikh, member of the joint committee, denied the allegations but said they heard about the complaint.

He claimed that they had ordered the peace committee members at the market to exempt South Sudanese traders from payment of tax.
