Govt rubbishes Mogae's report on peace evaluation

South Sudanese government has disregarded the latest report evaluating the status of implementation of the 2015 peace agreement presented by Festus Mogae, chairman of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC).

JMEC is a body tasked with overseeing implementation of the signed peace deal in war-town South Sudan.

”The JMEC had actually presented a report which was rather negative and not acceptable to the government of South Sudan, so the members of TGoNU in JMEC objected to the report,” stated the information minister Michael Makuei Lueth after a cabinet meeting on Friday.

Makuei claimed that the government report on the status of implementation of the 2015 peace accord found that 49.9% of the provisions in the signed peace agreement had already been implemented and that some provisions are a work in progress.

“17% of the provisions are in progress and these are provisions whose implementation has started, so they are moving forward. 31.1% of the provisions are not implemented,” said Makuei.

In his report last week, Festus Mogae said the degree of implementation of the 2015 peace agreement is low, raising concerns over lack of progress in many provisions of the peace agreement.

The peace monitor pointed out that the political, security, humanitarian and economic situation remain precarious and not conducive for peace implementation in the country.

He urged all parties to the peace agreement and estranged groups to accept peace and genuinely participate in revitalization of the 2015 peace agreement.
