EAST DARFUR STATE - 17 Apr 2024

12 kidney patients die at Al-Daein Dialysis Center

Twelve out of 25 patients suffering from kidney failure in Al-Daein, the capital of Sudan’s East Darfur State, who were receiving treatment at the kidney dialysis center have died according to the center's director, Amani Sughairoun.

The Advisory Council of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in East Darfur State handed over medicines to the kidney dialysis center in Al-Daein on Monday. The medications included artificial kidneys, blood transfusion sets, dialysis solutions, and bicarbonate solutions. This comes at a time when kidney dialysis operations at the hospital center were suspended, leading to the death of half of the patients.

The director of the Health Emergency Department at the State Ministry of Health, Dr. Mawadda Mohammed Ahmed, expressed gratitude to the Advisory Council for providing medications to the kidney dialysis center. She pointed out various challenges they face, including rising infection rates.

“Around 23 cases are being examined at the hospital due to lack of medicine. In addition, there is a shortage of immunity-boosting drugs,” she said.

The doctor however denied receiving any supplies from the Federal Ministry of Health since the start of the war in April 2023.

Dr. Amani Sughairoun, the director of the Kidney Dialysis Center, emphasized the importance of caring for kidney patients and providing life-saving medications.

“The center has been facing a shortage of medical supplies since the beginning of the war, leading to the death of several cases of kidney patients being treated at the center,” he said.

He called on charities, humanitarian organizations, and the people of East Darfur inside and outside the region to urgently intervene to address the situation.

Meanwhile, Fatima Adam Dawood, a representative of the RSF, revealed that they aim to support civilian institutions within their areas of control to provide services to citizens.

It was reported that the RSF provided a quantity of life-saving drugs and emergency medications, in addition to supporting the kidney Dialysis Center in Al-Daein.
