The sports tournament organized by the Zalingei People Initiative in memory of those killed during the war in Central Darfur concluded last Friday in Zalingei town.
The Al-Shajara team was crowned with the tournament cup after defeating their rival, Al-Ain team, in the final match. The event drew a large number of Zalingei citizens, engaging football enthusiasts.
Zalingei University Professor Al-Taher Haj Al-Nour, who observed the tournament and attended the final match, praised the initiative’s idea and organization. He highlighted the significant role of sports as a symbol of love and peace, emphasizing its power to dissolve differences and promote brotherhood in society.
Professor Al-Nour emphasized the importance of investing in youth, considering them the future. He stressed the need to support and engage them in sports, cultural, and awareness programs to prepare them for future responsibilities in the region.
“The activities showcase society’s ability to coexist, integrate, and embrace others through theatrical sports,” commented Al-Nour.
Jibril Al-Silek, a member of the organizing committee for the sports tournament, expressed immense satisfaction with the event, stating that it revitalized the spirit of Zalingei. He emphasized that the tournament’s outcomes should unite everyone against conflict, advocating the slogan “No to war and yes to peace.”

Alal Musa, a member of the Ahl Zalingei Initiative, one of the youth organizations sponsoring the competition, expressed appreciation for the participants in the sports tournament. He viewed the occasion as a chance to break free from the cycle of war and alleviate the anxieties associated with conflict.
Musa stated, “Such activities provide an opportunity to honour the sports figures who lost their lives during the war.” He emphasized that organizing events in an area surrounded by shelters for the displaced holds significant implications and positive outcomes for the children, families, and the community of Zalingei as a whole. This community has endured prolonged periods of pressure and suffering due to war.
