A peace rally organised by the Central Equatoria State Youth Union in Juba on Tuesday was called off after it failed to draw an audience.
The rally was planned to take place from 3:00- 5:00 p.m. but organisers sat there until 7:00 p.m. with only a few youths showing up and the top government officials who were slated to speak.
Youths said they did not hear about the rally while others expressed fear of attending political events.
State Minister of Finance David Juma, Youth Union president Albino Bol, state anti-corruption commission head Emmanuel Khamis State, the Mayor of Juba City Sarafino Wani and state information minister Soba Samuel were to speak at the rally.
Moro Isaac, the chairman of the state youth union said despite the failure of the rally to attract the public the union will call for another peace rally adding that since he took office three months back the youth of the state not met together. He did not mention when to call for the next rally.
“For the last three months since we came to power as leaders of youth of Central Equatoria and South Sudan, our first initiative was to build peace.” Moro said South Sudanese youth have problems of unemployment, claiming that coming together in a rally could help eliminate some problems youth face.
Moro said that few youths turned up for the rally but the ones that did will spread peace messages. Less than 20 youths turned up for the rally.
