Over 7,800 youth attended a campaign against tribalism and gender inequality conducted at the protection of civilians (PoC) site in Bentiu on March 1.
The campaign, organized by Action for Conflict Resolution (ACR), attracted women, schoolchildren, local artists and the public.
ACR is a non-political organization that strives to bridge important gaps between the government and grassroots communities, in order to enable a durable peace in South Sudan.
Participants marched with placards with words shunning tribalism.
“Thanks for coming out to us today. This event shows that our coming here means something to all of us. We need to shun tribalism and gender inequality and embrace ourselves in unity of diversity,” said 18-year-old Wang Kai on behalf Bentiu sport association.
He added, “I am urging ACR to renew their support in providing us with sports materials and training of trainers for coaches, captains and sport officials as part of fighting tribalism, gender inequality and another way of championing children’s right to play”.
Majority of the participants vowed to fight tribalism, which they considered a threat to the social and political stability of the country.
According to estimates, 72 per cent of South Sudan’s 12.4 million population are 30 years old and below.
