Youngers Women FC team defeated Lighton Women FC 4-0 in the Independence Day football cup final played at the Freedom Square in Torit town on Wednesday last week.

Youngsters FC, local football association officials said, will represent the state in the South Sudan championship cup due next month.

Mondia Sam Joe, Youngsters FC’s coach, expressed joy for winning. He said women football faces enormous challenges in the country.

“We have a lot of challenges in terms of ladies football…I am looking at two to three years when football in Torit will develop,” said Mondia.

“I am even focused that I will be hosting other states here in Torit and I am happy about that,” he stressed.

On her part, Grace Akello, Lighton FC’s female manager, congratulated their opponents and expressed hope for the next season.

She said football would not prosper if parents restrict their daughters.

Torit Local Football Association (TLFA) boss, Juma Joe Adriano, urged South Sudan government to support women football by providing sports attires.

“Let us support them earlier so that we do not say later that there is no budget because these children will represent us.  It is shameful if people come and see our children playing barefoot,” said Juma.

He urged the government to allow the association to fence playgrounds, saying the association should also be allowed to collect money from spectators who often watch football.

Meanwhile, Torit state minister for local government, Ukidimoi Ugura said the participation of women in sports activities generates unity. He urged talented girls to continue in sports, despite their challenges.

“You have shown us that the spirit of unity has appeared. It means women can lead us the way they administer football,” said Ugura.
