A police constable deployed in Yirol East County in Lakes State on Tuesday took his own life in Malek Payam after he was allegedly accused of committing adultery.

The state’s police mouthpiece, Major Elijah Mabor Makuac, told Radio Tamazuj Wednesday that the deceased who was in detention at the Malek Payam Police Station, hung himself in the cell at night.

“A police private identified as Taban Achiek committed suicide by hanging himself to death in the police cell at Malek Payam in Yirol East County on Tuesday night. According to the information available, the deceased was accused of committing adultery by the husband of a woman with whom he sired a child some time back,” he explained. “The deceased was alleged to have impregnated a girl some time back and the girl was later married off to another person.”
“After the child grew up, the deceased police constable approached the relatives of his former lover and requested that they give him his child to raise but the child’s mother, who is married to another man now, gave a condition that she would have to go with her child to the policeman’s home,” Maj. Mabor added.

According to the police spokesperson, the issue escalated into violence between the woman and her husband who eventually opened a case of adultery against the policeman.

“The woman’s husband immediately decided to accuse the policeman of adultery and opened a case with the police. The accused policeman initially fled but was later apprehended by his colleagues and detained,” he said. “Investigations into the case were ongoing and he was going to be arraigned such that their matter is settled before the court.
Unfortunately, he committed suicide on Tuesday night and the body was found the next morning.”

“This is the tragic incident that happened in occurred in Yirol East County,” Mabor concluded.
