Yei Teacher Training College resumes full operations

Yei Teachers Training College (YTTC) has resumed full operations since Monday, senior officials said.

Yei Teachers Training College (YTTC) has resumed full operations since Monday, senior officials said.

YTTC was closed in 2016 after conflict erupted in Yei River State and paralyzed the operations of the college as its teaching tutors and students fled the area for safety.

Speaking at the launch, YTTC’s principle James Kepo said the resumption of the college will help fight illiteracy while developing human resources in the education sector.

He noted that over 60 teachers have enrolled to study grade three certificates and diploma courses in education. Kepo called on the ministry of education and the state government to support education in the state.

“Our call is simple and very important; please support us with the resources and the space needed for the expansion of education programs in Yei River State and I want to say that the launch of this college is a full return of Yei teacher training college,” he added.

YTTC principle also revealed that together with the education ministries in both state and national governments are working to upgrade the college Yei University.

For his part, Yei River State education minister Kenyi Abiyaza admitted that there are not sufficient resources to maintain teachers.

“We have not put enough resources for developing and maintaining teachers and this is what we are facing at the moment. The last pay for the teachers of Yei was April and the teachers are up to now teaching in the schools without pay. As a government we really need to unite to bring hope and improve the teaching profession in Yei River State,” Abiyaza said.

Speaking as the chief guest at the re-opening, Yei River State acting Governor Yusto Baba welcomed the re-opening of the college saying, “through education, we can use it as a tool to kill illiteracy, hatred, poverty, under production and other social norms that derail development.
