The management of Yei Electricity Cooperative (YECO) has announced the resumption of electric power supply in South Sudan’s Yei town after more than two years suspension over lack of fuel and insecurity in the area.
Recently, YECO has been supplying power in the town during the night to improve security within the town and residential areas.
Bullen Gwagwe, the chairman of the power utility announced that the management has started providing power for four hours during the day and four hours during the night.
“We have resumed supplying electricity for eight hours at the moment following a slight improvement in the cost of fuel and we hope to increase our hourly supply if we have seen that customs are paying their bills promptly,” Gwagwe said in a statement.
Isaac Taban a businessman in Yei town expressed happiness saying the power supply will help improve his juice business.
“I am very happy and I need to thank the government for ensuring that the power works during daytime as well as at night. The current power supply will help me provide quality cool juice supply in the town. We are very happy but the operating hours are few we want the government and YECO to ensure that it extends its operating hours,” said the jubilant Taban.
Robert Dusman also expressed happiness, “we can now access other services like music; our local radio stations functioning well during the day hours because of the daylight supply and I am very happy.”
In January, YECO partly resumed power supply in the town but local residents complained that the power supply was unreliable as they experienced constant fluctuations. However, with continuous violence and insecurity in the town, YECO could not continue to supply electricity.
