Yei residents want AU to take over South Sudan peace process

Local residents in Yei River State have expressed frustration on Friday at the failure to end the ongoing conflict through the recent IGAD-led peace talks in Addis Ababa.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, several residents said IGAD's approach towards the spiralling conflict in South Sudan is inadequate, pointing out that South Sudan needs a new body to lead the peace process.

They demanded that the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) to take over the peace process in South Sudan.

A resident who identified himself as Emmanuel blamed the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) for failing to end the ongoing conflict in South Sudan.

“We are blaming IGAD for failing to address the South Sudan political crisis. We want IGAD to hand over the peace process to the AU to handle this issue because we don’t want war again,” he said.

Grace Nyoka, another resident in Yei town, said the peace process should be handed over to the African Union.

Peter Lokosang also accused IGAD of failing to bring about peace in South Sudan. “We are very tired of a peace process that doesn’t yield fruits,” he said.
