Residents of Yei town have asked local authorities to rehabilitate the major roads within the town and its outskirts.
The calls come after rains affected the movement of civilians.
Samuel Kenyi, a local resident, told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that most major roads are in bad shape, full of potholes and congest traffic flow in the area.
“The roads in the town are in bad conditions and with the daily heavy rains, we are finding it difficult to move and we want the government to ensure that the roads are upgraded for better public use,” he said.
“We are also calling on UNMISS [United Nations Mission in South Sudan] in Yei to rehabilitate the roads together with the government,” he added.
Joyce Tabita, resident of Jigomoni area, said continuous rains have made drivers and motorists disrespectful of the pedestrians as most of them flash dirty water on people.
“Movement in the town has become a big problem after rains. Government and NGO [Non-Governmental Organization] cars flash dirty water on us. We are getting hard life on streets and we want the government, together with UNMISS to work on the roads,” said Tabita.
On his part, Anthony Philip Morgan, director for roads maintenance in the state ministry of physical infrastructure said they concentrated on renovation of roads in residential areas over the past months.
Morgan, however, said the government still lacks enough funding and technical equipment to rehabilitate the major roads.
“The unfortunate thing is that our grader that has been on use has broken down due to lack of tyres. The government is still struggling to fix it. A single hand cannot do enough and I am calling on partners like UNMISS to join hands and contribute towards development. I know UNMISS is doing road construction works in other states and we want them to do the same here,” he said.
