Police in Yei River State have reminded people that it is illegal and extremely dangerous to fire celebratory gunshots into the air to celebrate the New Year.
Major General Yuasa Lujang Kamba, the state police commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj this afternoon that shooting indiscriminately into the air will be investigated and punished accordingly.
The senior police officer also warned police personnel against consumption of alcohol while on duty, saying strict measures will be taken against those who violate the order.
“We don’t want any gunshots in town and even outside Yei town. We don’t want soldiers to drink excessive alcohol while offering security protection. Anyone violating this directive will be dealt with according to the law,” he stressed.
For his part, Bishop Hillary Luate Adeba of the Episcopal diocese of Yei called on the state government to provide security and protection for citizens without gunshots.
“I would like to encourage the Yei River State government, especially those responsible for maintaining security to ensure that there are no gunshots,” he said.
