Police in Yei River County of Central Equatoria State said they are investigating the murder of a man in the Lutaya residential area of Yei town.

Robert Khamis, 30, went missing from his home in Erap and on 17 April his decomposing body was found after his family reported his disappearance to police. 

Yei police commissioner Gen. Yoasa Lujang said no suspect has been arrested so far but that a thorough investigation into the matter has started.

“We are making close monitoring and investigation and that investigation involves a lot of things in the security sector and up to now no suspect has been found and the investigation is ongoing,” he said.

Lujang appealed to the residents and community leaders to cooperate with the police in tracking down the perpetrators and improve security safety in Yei River County.

“My message to the community members and the chiefs to be serious in detecting criminal activities of this kind by reporting to the police timely so that the police can trace the killing of people like Robert Khamis Raphael,” he urged.

A relative of the deceased who identified himself only as Evans called on the police to help track and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“As a family, we don’t have the power to investigate, but we trust the government has an upper hand to find out the killers of our son Robert,” Evans said.

Justoson Victor, the Executive Director of Yamora, a civil society organization, urged the police to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested and brought to book to deter similar crimes. 

“I would like to appeal that the violence against civilians are brought to an end and we need to see that civilians are protected by the government. We need to see the results of these investigations and we need to see the results of perpetrators arrested and brought to book,” he added.

Yei residents have said that security in the outskirts of the town is deteriorating and have called on the government to provide safety so that farmers can cultivate crops.
