Yei operating without county legislative councils, anti-corruption commission

Residents of Yei River State have complained about lack of government oversight bodies to provide checks and balance system for public institutions.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, several citizens and former officials said Yei said the government has been operating without an anti-corruption commission and county legislative councils to oversee county operations since its creation.

“For us to consider that the government is functioning, we know there are three organs of the government which include the legislature, the judiciary and the executive. In Yei River State we have executive as the only body functioning, its transitional parliament is not seen proactive like other parliaments in other states,” said a former member of a county legislative council.

The former lawmaker further said that absence of the anti-corruption commission in the state is letting the state government dormant in delivering services to people.

“We need the anti-corruption to be instituted in Yei, the public funds and resources are being squandered unchallenged. We are calling on the national government to pressure the state government to establish the county legislative councils and the anti-corruption commission so that those found playing with public resources are exposed and punished according to the laws of this country,” he said.

The director general of the state ministry of local government and law enforcement, Leon Lemeri George, acknowledged the concerns and blamed insecurity for the delay in the formation of the key government institutions.

“The formation of the councils was delayed because of insecurity in Yei River State. But a recent resolution for the establishment of the county councils has been passed. We demand the commissioners to present to us the names of the Payams and the Bomas including its population to my office,” said George.

George added that the state government is working to establish institutions that are legal after receiving presidential approval.
