Authorities in Yei municipality on Friday launched a clean-up campaign with the aim of spreading environmental awareness.
Yei Town Mayor Alfathi Morgan told Radio Tamazuj that the campaign aimed at maintaining cleanliness, saying campaign activities include the cleaning of residential areas, schools, hotels, markets, government offices and NGO compounds.
“I want to tell the citizens and foreigners living in Yei town to know that our environment is becoming so dirty. If we leave the grass to grow tall, we will suffer from snake bites in our houses and also cases of malaria,” he said.
According to the municipal official, the campaign is an effort to address the problem of littering.
“We are human beings and we are supposed to stay in a clean place. We need all houses to have latrines and bathing shelters in our compounds, shops and offices,” he said.
Alfathi stressed that the municipality is now moving towards punishing anyone who violates waste management orders within Yei town.
“Anyone has no pit latrine, rubbish pit and bathing shelter will be charged accordingly,” he said.
