South Sudan’s Yei River State governor, Emmanuel Anthony Adil has called on Muslims and Christians in the world’s youngest nation to unite for peace, reconciliation and unity.

In his message on Eid al-Fitr on Tuesday, Governor Anthony said the day should mark a new chapter for building peace, reconciliation and support towards the implementation of the revitalized peace deal.

“As we celebrate the 2019 Eid al-Fitr in Yei River State, I call upon all the South Sudanese and the foreigners from our neighboring countries to share this noble course to work together both Christians and Muslims closely for peace”, he said.

Adil appealed to Christians and Muslims in the state to embrace each other and work towards peace building.

“I would like to encourage our brothers both in Christians and Muslims to embrace each other as human beings and build our society to be peaceful and there is nothing more important than embracing peace,” said the governor.

“We as a government are proud of our religions for always moving together irrespective of their denomination and one of the secrets towards success is the unity of the religious leaders,” he added.

The state government has granted freedom of worship and expression to promote good governance and socio-economic development, according to the governor.

“They have been cooperating and you find where there are functions in the Muslim or the Christian side, they always attend and it has never happened in the history of Yei River State that they wronged one another. As a government, we allow freedom of worship and expression in respect to the others and we wish that it continues to a greater height,” stressed Adil.

Majority of South Sudanese follow Christianity or traditional religions but an estimated 6% of the population is Muslim, according to recent researches.
