The governor of South Sudan’s Yei River state, Emmanuel Adil Anthony has reinstated the city’s municipality status, three years after it was dissolved by his predecessor, David Lokonga.

Adil has, in a gubernatorial decree extended to Radio Tamazuj Tuesday, appointed Alfathi Morgan as the new mayor for the municipal council.

Alfathi served in Yei town council prior to his mayoral appointment.

Since the municipality was created in 2016, its officials and county authorities have fought over land, territorial boundaries and sharing of fixed and movable assets managed by the county government.

The governor, in a separate decree, sacked the state information minister, Alfred Kenneth Duku, but gave no reasons.

Duku, in an interview with Radio Tamazuj, welcomed his removal and vowed to serve the state government in any capacity, if called upon.

“I reaffirm my commitment to work for peace, reconciliation and unity in our beloved country South Sudan. Leaders come and leaders go but this great nation will stay forever,” said Duku.
