The Governor of Yei River State David Lokonga Moses has formed a team to investigate recent violence in the area.
In recent weeks the Yei area has seen a significant rise in fighting, and Radio Tamazuj has reported on extrajudicial killings and disappearances in the area. Several people have been brutally slaughtered and there has been widespread robbery.
Lokonga said an investigation committee comprised of the state advisor on security and other top officials have been tasked to determine the factors behind the violence.
I have formed a powerful security committee to go around and investigate the people behind the killings inflicted on the civilians” Lokonga said.
Lokonga condemned the recent insecurity, and expressed his commitment to bring accountability.
Lokonga ordered the security forces, who have a controversial track record in the area, to ensure that civilians are protected and allowed freedom of movement. Government forces have been accused of human rights violations.
“I have always ordered the security organs not to harass any civilian in Yei River state. They needed the government protection and be allowed to move freely without any restriction or intimidation,” Lokonga said.
In another development, police are investigating robberies of foreign shops in Yei.
Armed looters are believed to have broken into the Darfuian, Erithean and Ethiopian business shops last Thursday.
