The governor of South Sudan’s Yei River State David Lokonga Moses has urged President Salva Kiir to allow for trials of suspects arrested in connection with the killings of people and other crimes committed during the events in Yei last year.
Governor Lokonga made these remarks while addressing a public rally in Yei town in the presence of President Kiir on Tuesday.
The state official called on President Kiir to direct the relevant authorities to try suspected criminals in Yei.“During the crisis of 2016, we have some people who have been apprehended in connection with the killings and these people are staying in jail, their legs and hands are tied,” said Konga.
“I wanted to appeal to your Excellency that if these people are tried, I think it is better so that to know whether they are guilty or not like the case of Victory who was wounded and taken to Nairobi and died” he added.
Lokonga pointed out that there are over 180 police officers who went for trainings, saying they are ready to graduate in order to keep law and order in the state.
The governor urged President Kiir to open up roads between Juba and Yei to allow aid assistance to reach the people of Yei.
For his part, President Kiir promised that he will look into his files first.“I will find out who is handling this case, and will let you know,” said Kiir.
