Yei fighting cripples education efforts

Rural students in Yei have called on local government officials to restore peace amid a deteriorating security situation.

Since fighting in July, the Yei area has seen fighting between government and opposition forces.

Officials from the Yei River State Ministry of Education say that many of the schools in rural regions are not operational due to insecurity.

“Let the war stop and led leaders build good schools, bring for us books, and employ more teachers so that we can move forward like other countries,” said Alice Amude, a local student.

Another student, Betty Monika, says that poor classrooms discourage students from attending school and that because of insecurity, many students are simply staying home.

“Our school is build out of grass and when it is raining, we all have to run to other classes and teachers don’t teach, our blackboards are very old and we don’t have enough books” said Monika.
