Yei farmers happy over high crops yield, call for peace

Farmers in Yei River County said there is good crop harvest this season despite insecurity that prevented most farmers from mass scale crop production.

Multiple farmers in Yei told Radio Tamazuj on Friday that they have realized good harvest of maize, beans, vegetables, groundnuts and many other cereals.

“In Yei our entire life depends on farming. We used to dig three to four acres per household before the crisis but currently out of the produce I have harvested, good quantities of maize, beans and groundnuts but still not enough” said one of the farmers.

Another female farmer said, “In the place where I stay, I have harvested maize and tomatoes and it has helped us a lot. We are still going on with farming for our second season planting which will help us in the future.”

Another farmer appealed to both the national and state governments to restore total peace and stability in Yei to enable farmers to produce enough for export to other states and parts of the region by next year.

“What we need is to be given the chance through peace so that we are able to move long distance to embark on large scale production in the country,” he said.

Yei River State was a well-known area best for food production and bread basket for the whole country before the outbreak of civil war.
