Yei town and the surrounding region is facing a protection crisis, according to a U.N. agency report from a September visit to the area.

The OCHA report paints a bleak picture of the Yei area, which has seen continuous fighting since fighting in the capital of Juba in July.

“Fighting and continued insecurity in Yei has resulted in the displacement of around 60-70 percent of the population,” the report said.

In recent weeks, a slew of government officials have defected to the opposition. Both the government and opposition have set up checkpoints in the roads to the area.

“Individuals feel that they are in the middle of armed groups both inside and outside of town and fear attacks from all groups. They live in constant fear and are unsure of where the threat will come from,” the report says.

More than 100,000 people are trapped in Yei town, according to the U.N. refugee agency.
