Yei expects low coffee and crop harvest over insecurity this year

A top agricultural official in Yei River State says the rate of food and crop production for this year 2016 is expected to be low due to insecurity.

Edimon Taban Gogo says most of the coffee and crop farmers in the rural counties of the state could not continue with second and third year crop cultivation as well as harvest due to consistent disruption by armed men from both sides.

Gogo says losing production this year will greatly affect revenues for the local population and expects looming hunger next year.

He calls for dialogue and implementation of the signed peace agreement to bring to an end the suffering of the people in the rural areas.

“Some of the payams and bomas are severely affected because most of the farmers may not have access to harvest their coffee and crops. Some farmers in the rural areas have already moved to Uganda and Congo without harvesting their crops.”
