A three-day synod organized by the Episcopal Church diocese in South Sudan’s Yei River State ended last week with calls for full support towards the dissemination of the peace deal and the lifting of suspension on development programs.
In a communiqué issued after the synod, the Episcopal Bishop of Yei Diocese, Hillary Luate Adeba said church leaders agreed to lift the suspension of development programs.
“We call upon the leadership of Yei diocese to lift the suspension of development plans pronounced at the time of the conflict in Yei River State. We urge the full return of Yei Teachers Training College to its original premise in Yei. The synod called for start of the process of establishment of Centenary University in Yei River State,” said Luate.
Religious leaders, among other issues, approved Luate to serve as Bishop for more three years, in addition to discussing the effects of the ongoing conflict on churches and worshipers in rural churches.
Also discussed were motivation of pastors, development of schools and health facilities under Episcopal Churches, drilling of more water points and construction of new parishes in the rural parts of the state.
“Churches expressed deep concern over the destruction of the environment as witnessed by the rampant and uncontrolled logging of rare tree species that will have negative implications on the environment and the future generation,” said Luate.
Religious leaders, drawn from at least five archdeaconries, attended the 8th annual church event, which discussed achievements, challenges and recommendations towards church developments.
