The commissioner of Yei River County in Central Equatoria State has issued an order regulating night movement, effectively a curfew, and constituted a security team to patrol the town to improve security.
Local authorities made announcements on local radio stations informing the public to cease movement between 11 pm and 5 am to allow the security patrol team to protect the population and their properties.
Commissioner Aggrey Cyrus said there have been cases of night crimes posing security threats to the local population in the town and residential areas.
“The night patrols start at 11 pm and end at 5 am Central African Time. And with the order, we will want to see an improved security situation and we hope this will continue to create calm and peace in the town,” Commissioner Cyrus said. “We have requested the people not to move anyhow from 11 pm and disco places should stop at 11 pm. We want people to be at home not to fall in the hands of criminals.”
Meanwhile, Malish Taban, a local community leader in Logo Boma welcomed the order and said night patrols will improve the security situation in Yei town.
“This order is good because at night hours people don’t see far and there are a lot of criminals moving,” Taban said. “Women are being raped. Men, women, and students move anyhow at night hours which is dangerous. Day movement is good according to me and I am happy with this order issued by the commissioner.”
