The council of ministers in Yei River state has resolved to pay tuition fees and the cost of accommodation for 45 students pursuing various courses in Indian universities. The payment will be met using its asset shares from the defunct central Equatoria resources.
The decision was reached during a council of ministers chaired by Governor David Lokonga Moses on Thursday last week.
The resolution was a response to a notice by the administration of the universities alerting students to communicate their plights or else they would lose the opportunity granted to them under the then Central Equatoria state.
The students were given only seven days to complete their dues or risk deportation. Yei River state information Stephen Ladu told reporters that the council of ministers in Yei River state has resolved that a committee headed by Yei River state education director general to follow their monetary shares deposited with the central bank be allocated to meet the needs of the stranded students in India.
“There is a committee that has been constituted headed by the three director generals of education from the three states of Jubek, Terekeka and Yei River states. This committee will follow all the assets of central Equatoria state especially the money deposited in the central bank so that this money is properly used for paying tuition and hostel fees in India so that the 45 students studying in India are not subjected to hardship and other things. This scholarship should be maintained under the assets of central Equatoria to cover that”
Among other issues discussed in the council of ministers included a high level committee to be formed to go the camps in Uganda to tell South Sudanese who fled insurgencies in Yei River state to return home since there is relative and stability in the area.
