An official in South Sudan’s Yei River State has urged county authorities to issue laws that prohibit animals from roaming in towns and farmlands.
James Nyamara Duku, the director general at the state ministry of agriculture, told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that several farmers complained that roaming animals discourage farming.
He said the ministry has officially written to county commissioners and the mayor of Yei town, instructing them to arrest any roaming animal.
“Yei River State is an agricultural area and the loitering of these animals destroys crops. So for the farmers to cultivate, we have directed the commissioners and the mayor to arrest any roaming animals in and around towns,” Duku said.
The move, he said, will allow farmers go to cultivate.
Yei River State lies within South Sudan’s greenbelt region with favourable amounts of rain and fertile soils.
However, since the peace agreement was signed in 2018, the state has experienced continued hostilities amongst forces in the area.
