A community leader in Jansuk Payam of Yei River County in Central Equatoria State has criticised the municipality for the open disposal of waste in Logobero area.
The area, north of Yei town, has been a dumping site since 2015.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, Joseph Sebit Lasuba, the Payam head chief said authorities have not created an alternative waste pit for the already filled up dumping site.
He pointed out that dumping wastes in the open exposes area residents to risks of contracting diseases.
“I want trucks to offload the waste into a pit. As I speak now, waste is being dumped in open spaces and once it rains, the smell is all over and this will cause diseases. I want the government to pour the waste into a pit,” Sebit explained.
For his part, Ismail Juma, the public health inspector in Yei, said they lack machines and funds to construct a dumping site in the area.
“The dumping site is not properly maintained due to some challenges like poor conditions of roads to the site and the lack of dumping sites. We have tried to address these challenges, but we don’t have an excavator to dig a pit,” he said.
The health official urged non-governmental organisations in Yei to help address problems affecting communities in Logobero area.
