Yabus River flood destroys homes in Bunj

A number of civilians reported that floods from Khor Yabous have caused the destruction of a number of houses in Bunj in Upper Nile State after water spilled over the dams that the authorities had earlier built.

One of the civilians who spoke to Radio Tamazuj stated that the flooding has resulted in the collapse of nearly 30 houses in Hai Malakia near Bunj market and more than 50 houses in the area around Dabanga market. Civilians also stated that they were able to rebuild the dam with the help of the authorities and that they were still gathering donations from the people with the aim of opening a main drainage system in the city to avoid more damage.

A flood victim said: “The banks have a terrace and the water came too high and went over it. The water came with strong force this time. It came near our area and drowned all our houses. We rebuilt the terrace where the water got over. Now we’re going around collecting money to buy gas to open the drainage again.”

Authorities in Bunj County had announced earlier the completion of preparations for floods from Khor Yabous and any damage it could cause with the beginning of the rainy season.
