The World Bank has announced $100 million in support for those affected by the floods and an additional $38 million to support the displaced and refugee communities in South Sudan.
Ousmane Dione, the World Bank Country Director for Ethiopia, Eritrea and South Sudan, announced the financial assistance in Juba on Thursday.
“We have managed at the request of the government of South Sudan to mobilize 100 million US dollars in response to current flooding happening in South Sudan,” Dione said. “We also managed to mobilize another 38 million US dollars in support of communities affected by the flooding and refugees residing in South Sudan and their hosting communities.”
Dione said the bank is guided by the 2021-2023 South Sudan County Engagement Note, a strategic document, to make policy and programming decisions.
“The note focuses on; one, enhancing institutional capacity and sustainability, second to enhance resilience and livelihood opportunities and the third pillar of the engagement is to provide continuous support to basic services delivery, how to make sure that ordinary South Sudanese people can have access to basic services,” he explained.
He added, “We have put gender development as a cross-cutting issue for those three pillars because we believe that the role of the South Sudanese woman with respect to the development of this country is extremely important.”
Dione pointed out that the World Bank is not only a monetary institution but also a knowledge and scientific institution.
