Women passengers have been allowed to sit in the front seats of taxis in Abyei, an area on the border of Sudan and South Sudan, following a meeting between the Abyei Drivers’ Union and the Rummamer county commissioner.

The issue was highlighted in a recent radio report produced by Abyei Today.

Abyei’s drivers union still insists that pregnant women and those travelling with children will still have to sit behind the driver for their own safety in case of an accident. The union had previously argued that women sitting in the front seat could grab the driver’s arm in the event of an emergency; the claim was dismissed by women’s groups.
