A woman was killed and a child injured when a group of armed men attacked an area in Athooc County of South Sudan’s Jonglei State on Saturday, a local official disclosed.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Sunday, the county commissioner, Abraham Mamer Kur said the incident occurred in Akwai-Deng area.
“This incident happened at about 3:00 am when the armed group attacked a family in Akwai-Deng village. They killed an old woman who was sleeping at a shelter where cattle were kept and injured a two-year-old child in another room after the mother screamed,” he explained.
Mamer said the injured child is receiving treatment at Bor Hospital.
The local official claimed armed criminals from neighboring Boma State carried out the attack with the intention of stealing cattle.
He said the area is relatively calm after the incident, but urged Boma authorities to control the movement of armed youth.
Boma officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
