A 26-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging in her house last Sunday at Morwari B Quarter Council in Torit Municipal Council in South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria State, officials said.
The area's chief Michael Obusuk Daniel told Radio Tamazuj that the body of late Theresa Nyabol, a Shilluk by tribe, was found hanging inside the house on Monday morning.
Chief Obusuk described the incident as unfortunate saying there were no reports of conflict in the woman's home before she took her life.
“Unfortunately, we came and learned that she hanged herself. We came in the morning and found her hanging in the house, we don’t know the cause. The husband seems to be having three wives. Theresa is the third wife and they used to have some tension by then," he said.
He added that the body of Theresa was then taken to the police station and later to the cemetery for burial.
Chief Obusuk appealed to families to involve relatives, friends, and neighbors and seek health solutions when going through tough times.
“Assemble people and try to discuss over that issue or misunderstanding at home. To the women, our mothers, our sisters, our aunties who are there in different communities, different localities if you have any problem that you are facing or challenges that you are facing in your life, don’t try to keep quiet with it, you share with your friends, colleagues, your case will be solved," he noted.
Eastern Equatoria state police spokesperson Major Justin Kleopus Takuru confirmed the incident and said nobody has been arrested after primary investigations show the late woman had no problem with anyone in the family.
“We asked the husband and he said there was no issue, even the other women had no issue because there was no quarrel at home. The husband did not fight her and he had just come from a journey. It is not clear why the woman hanged herself,” he explained.
According to Maj. Kleopus, a hospital report shows the woman was not beaten.
