A -50-year-old woman, identified as Acina Jina Atai Peter, was reported dead after hanging herself in Torit town, Eastern Equatoria State, on Friday.
Ohisa Charles, Sub-chief of the Mairo neighbourhood, told Radio Tamazuj that the woman hanged herself to death using a rope.
“The government should help in putting some measures to control alcohol consumption. Alcohol should not be taken in the morning hours. It can even be banned because our people are dying,” Ohisa said.
Meanwhile, Major General John Luny, Eastern Equatoria State Deputy Commissioner of Police, confirmed the incident, which he said was a result of excessive consumption of alcohol.
“About the issue of the lady who hanged herself, the reason behind the incident is alcohol, according to the neighbours. All her neighbours say that whenever she drinks alcohol, she always says I will kill myself,” John said.
He, however, said police are still investigating the incident.
Mustafa Albino, Mayor of Torit Municipal Council, said the body of the late Jina had been taken to Torit mortuary for medical examination.
Last week, a 64-year-old woman also committed suicide by hanging herself after a family quarrel in the same area.
