A 28-year old woman and her 4-month old baby died of suspected malaria in Waat Town of Bieh State on Thursday, a local official said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj Tuesday, Isaac Pur Ruot, the Waat County commissioner said the woman identified as Sarah Nyaluak Pal died Thursday morning at her house after presenting malaria-like symptoms for days without treatment.

“She died at 8 AM and her baby later died the same day. She was severely vomiting and living under harsh weather condition. The home is flooded and there is no food. She lived in colds,” he said.

The local official pointed out that suspected malaria cases are rapidly increasing as heavy rains continue.

He further revealed that the locals depend on herbal medicines and bush meat for survival since June as floods cut off greater Lou areas.

Pur appealed to the national government and aid agencies operating in the country to intervene by supplying life-saving drugs and food.

The World Health Organization describes Malaria as a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Malaria is preventable and curable.
