Woman arrested over market blaze in Lol

A woman was arrested in connection with a large fire that destroyed Wedwil market in South Sudan’s Lol State, police said.

A woman was arrested in connection with a large fire that destroyed Wedwil market in South Sudan’s Lol State, police said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, the state police commissioner, Major-General James Simon said a woman had been arrested in connection with a fire that destroyed 10 shops at Wedwil area last month.

The senior police officer said the woman, who was cooking pancakes in the market, would be arraigned in court in Nyamlel town. “The traders who incurred losses expect compensation from the woman who is accused of negligence over the fire incident,” Simon said.

“We are investigating the woman after her arrest over negligence charges. We can release the poor woman on bail but the affected traders will not understand the situation,” he added.

The police commissioner declined to identify the woman by name as investigations are underway.

According to Simon, the woman charged in connection with the fire that spread through 10 shops cannot pay compensation for the losses because she doesn’t have enough money.

The police commissioner expressed hope that the court will consider the woman’s situation and find a solution to the issue.

The state police boss did not say how much money the traders lost after the incident.
