A woman suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol is reported to have burned her 9-month old baby to death accidentally in Tonj State.

Tonj police officer, Makuei Ramandan, told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that the incident occurred at War Machar village, about 45 kilo meters from Tonj town.

Ramadan said that the drunken woman was sleeping with her child near fire and when she fell asleep, the child got burned to death.

“After the women realized the child was dead she wrapped it in pieces of cloth and took the dead child to the bush. Upon her return, she was caught by people who recognized her. They asked her why she was moving at night and not using the path, she said that her child died that is why she moved at night,” he said.

“We will first send her to hospital to check if she is insane or was under the influence of alcohol that led her to commit the crime,” he added.

According to the police officer, this is the first case of its kind in the area, noting that the woman has pleaded guilty.
