A 37-year-old woman was reported gang-raped by two individuals aged 25 and 27 at Mankien Payam in Mayom County of Unity State.
National Police Spokesperson Col John Kassara Koang confirmed the incident to Radio Tamazuj Monday.
Koang said the incident occurred at around 6pm on October 17.
“The victim was referred to the Mankien Primary Healthcare Center for medical treatment,” he said.
A criminal case was opened at the Mayom County police headquarters and the security agents were hunting for the suspects, Koang added.
The Government of Unity State, the National Ministry of Justice and UNMISS have established a mobile court in Mayom to tackle rape and murder cases.
South Sudan laws provide for protection of women and girls from sexual abuse and exploitation and gender-based violence, including rape, early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation.
According to section 396 of the South Sudan Penal Code 2008, whoever intentionally engages in sexual harassment commits an offence and, upon conviction, shall be sentenced to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years, liable to a fine or both.
