Wildlife conservation authorities in Aweil State said they have confiscated large amounts of meat of wild animals and arrested five poachers in connection with the killing of animals in Awada Payam in Arroyo County last week.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, the Director of the Aweil Wildlife Conservation Department, Gen. Kuer Chol Bul, said five men have been arrested in possession of large quantities of meat of wild animals.
He further said 10 guns were also seized during a 9-day animal protection operation carried out by wildlife officers, saying some poachers managed to escape. He pointed out that the arrested poachers will be taken to court as soon as possible.
A poacher, who preferred anonymity, told Radio Tamazuj that he and his friends went to the bush to kill animals because their living condition was deteriorating due to lack of food. He denied claims that they are hunting animals for commercial purposes.
The arrested preachers called on the Aweil government to take them to court as soon as possible. They stressed that they did not kill any person.
