Wildlife authorities in Jonglei State have reported the arrest of a Toyota Noah vehicle loaded with bush meat, believed to be from poached animals.
The vehicle was intercepted on Thursday while traveling from Bor to Juba.
Jonglei wildlife spokesperson Capt Akol Majak, revealed that an estimated 48 Tiang antelopes and Mangala gazelles were killed by the suspected poachers.
“This vehicle, full of meat from wild animals, was seized on Thursday along the Bor-Juba road,” Capt Majak confirmed.
“Killing of wildlife is rampant in Jonglei, and this is one of the reasons the National Minister of Wildlife and Tourism visited Bor. The issue of poaching must be addressed. Wild animals are national resources and they attract tourists,” he said.
Majak said authorities were investigating the number of poachers involved in the crime, as they continue to combat illegal wildlife hunting in the Jonglei State.
Poaching has become a major concern in Jonglei, with many species under threat. Authorities were taking a firm stance on wildlife conservation, to ensure that these resources are protected for the future generations and for the economic benefit.
The National Minister of Wildlife and Tourism visited Bor on Thursday to strategize on tackling poaching and promoting conservation. The government continues to urge the public to support these initiatives and report any illegal activities related to wildlife.
