White Nile State is preparing for an influx of refugees from South Sudan to cross the border fleeing the conflict in Upper Nile State. The government says it will not obstruct the movement of refugees into the state.
Governor Yusif al Shanbali stated that large numbers of citizens of South Sudan had been detected moving on their way toward Sudan, and stressed that the competent state organs will deal with them according to international humanitarian law and will provide them with basic services.
Radio Tamazuj learnt that the situation in South Sudan’s northernmost large town of Renk was yesterday fairly calm. But heavy clashes elsewhere in the state including Malakal continued today.
The White Nile governor said he directed administrative authorities in Jebelein and Al Salam border localities to identify points of reception for southerners seeking refuge. He also ordered the security services to permit the movement of refugees crossing from South Sudan.
He added that the Humanitarian Aid Commission is prepared to provide them with basic services. The governor made his statement after inspecting the border that the state shares with South Sudan.
In the neighboring Sennar State, Governor Ahmed Abbas said that the security situation in South Sudan had not yet affected his state. He assured citizens especially farmers that things up to now are under control and being monitored for follow-up.
Blue Nile Governor Hussein Yassin Hamad likewise affirmed that the state has put in place precautions to protect its southern borders.
