The White Nile tannery has been fully rehabilitated by local and foreign investors, a senior state government official announced on Sunday.
Mohamed Omer El Rifai, director of White Nile tannery said in a press statement that the tannery had been equipped with modern machines in the tannery industry. He pointed out that the project’s cost was 20 million dollars, saying the opening will be in the next few days.
Rifai asserted that the move will improve the Sudanese economy by exporting manufactured leather not raw material like before.
He further said Sudan as a member of COMESA and the Arab Organization for Trade as well as Sahel-Saharan States will benefit economically from this industry.
He stressed that the tannery will contribute to the indigenisation of these industries in the country as well as its role in the fight against poverty and unemployment among communities.
