The governor of South Sudan’s Western Lakes State, Mahmuod Solomon Deer Agok has declared every Friday as a half-day of work in order to boost agriculture.

The declaration was issued in a circular to all ministries and counties.

"Ministries and counties of Western Lakes State circular No: 1/2019. In reference to Western Lakes State government policy for support of agricultural cultivation every year. Therefore, as governor of Western Lakes State, I hereby declare Fridays as days for cultivation for all workers to go for cultivation in the afternoon (12:00PM) every week with effect from June 21, 2019,” partly reads the circular.

The governor also wished citizens a fruitful agricultural season.

Since this year began, however, farmers in Western Lakes State have reportedly been experiencing absence of rainfall.

Despite the huge agricultural potential South Sudan possesses, only about 5 percent of the country’s arable land is reportedly cultivated.
