Western Lakes communities vow to end revenge killings

The Gony and Thuyic communities of South Sudan’s Western Lakes state on Monday vowed to end revenge killings after months of consultations.

About 17 people have died and many others injured in revenge killings between the two communities since April this year.

The state secretary of the Peace and Reconciliation Commission, Mabor Kau, told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that the local administration and youths of Gony and Thuyic communities on Monday agreed to end reprisal killings, arrest and prosecute criminals, and compensate families of the victims.

“After lengthy talks, the parties reached an agreement and we hope that they will stick to it so that we will not return to the fighting again,” he added.

According to Kau, the parties also pledged to discourage movement with arms and promote peaceful coexistence among themselves through social and cultural activities.
