Western Equatoria State (WES) Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Environment has accused partner organizations of distributing poor-quality seeds to local farmers, resulting in significant losses.
Agriculture Minister Alison Barnaba told Radio Tamazuj that both the ministry and farmers had received seeds that failed to germinate.
“Farmers were given seeds that did not sprout. I personally planted some to verify, but nothing grew. I had to go to the market to buy new seeds and replant,” Barnaba said.
“Since I took office, this has been one of the top complaints. To address this, we established a seed-testing lab to ensure the quality of seeds supplied by partners.”
Barnaba emphasized that all seeds must be tested before distribution.
“We have a seed testing lab in the ministry, and we’ve formed a Seed Quality Control Board. We cannot allow farmers to plant seeds without verifying their viability,” he added.
Barnaba acknowledged past challenges but noted improvements.
“We had problems with the previous FAO office head, but the new official is working closely with us to ensure quality, timely delivery, and proper distribution.”
To avoid further issues, Barnaba called on all partners to submit seed samples for testing before distribution. “We have a testing facility in Yambio, supported by the Dutch government. All seeds must undergo these tests before being given to farmers,” he stated.
Yambio farmer Gabriel Khamis shared his experience:
“Some seeds germinate, but others do not. Maize and okra grew, but onions and beans didn’t,” he said.
Khamis criticized the timing of the seed distribution, saying; “seeds are being given too late. I urge our partners to work with farmers and use local seeds instead of ones treated with chemicals”.
Another farmer, Justin Ueko, confirmed the issue.
“The seeds are not good, and many don’t germinate. Partners should deliver seeds on time, and the government should work more closely with them for better distribution,” Ueko said.
FAO’s Yambio office declined to comment the matter when reached by Radio Tamazuj.
