Members of parliament in South Sudan’s Western Bahr al Ghazal State yesterday extended the term in office of the State Governor Rizig Zachariah Hassan for three more years until 9 July 2018.
The assembly’s speaker Mario John Nyibang announced the legislature has amended article 62 (2) which would have terminated the governor’s term on 9 July 2015.
“We have also amended article 92 (2) which terminate the period of the state governor on the 9 July 2015,” he said.
The constitutional amendment bill was presented to the house on 21 April by the state minister of local government.
Nyibang pointed out that the extension of the state government was passed unanimously by all the members in three reading stages.
Governor Rizig commended the Assembly’s decision to extend his term in office for three years. “Your decision to extend my period means that the state assembly is working to fulfil citizen’s need because our people need services from the government,” he said.
He said services cannot be provided if there is political wrangling between the executive and legislature. Rizig vowed to provide security, stability and development in the state.
