West Kordofan: Volunteer drive to win back Babanusa residents

Volunteers from Babanusa in Sudan’s West Kordofan State have launched the “Return to Babanusa” initiative, to facilitate the return of the displaced residents to the city.

The initiative has several phases, including the coordination with the warring factions.

Babanusa has witnessed intense fighting for over six months between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), leading to the flight of most residents to displacement centers.

The “Return to Babanusa” official spokesperson, Suleiman Mohammed Suleiman, told Radio Tamazuj: “The initiative comes in response to the critical conditions faced by the residents of Babanusa in the displacement centers.”

He indicated that the initiative consists five phases, including launching a media, forming a delegation of local dignitaries to contact the warring parties, and initiating negotiations with SAF and RSF to secure safety guarantees.

Suleiman explained that the fourth phase involves addressing international organizations to improve the environment and remove debris within the city, followed by the implementation of the return project through the relocation of the residents.

He disclosed that they had begun communications with the military factions to ascertain their agreement to implement the project.
